Plesso di via D'Azeglio - Cortile interno

The History Unit brings together professors and researchers engaged in the study of historical processes, from the ancient world to the contemporary age, investigated in their political-institutional, social, economic, religious, and cultural dimensions, in constant dialogue with the disciplines of geography and the history of political thought.
The teaching activities of the members of the Unit take place within a wide range of degree courses as well as in PhD programmes offered by the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Industries.

The Unit promotes high-profile research, with a well-established national and international vocation. This is expressed not only in the scientific output of individual researchers and the results achieved in competitive funded research, but also in a shared and participatory dimension, as evidenced by the long-standing activities of laboratories, research groups, and seminar cycles involving all members of the Unit. Within this framework, the following are active: the Laboratorio per la storia del pensiero politico “De Cive” (Laboratory for the history of political thought “De Cive"), which brings together and develops the historical and political interests present in the Unit; the Seminari di Europa (Seminars of Europe), dedicated to Greek and Roman history; the Gruppo di ricerca per la Storia dell’Università di Parma (Research Group for the History of the University of Parma); and, more recently, the initiatives promoted by “MAPTER – Dalla mappa al territorio” (MAPTER - From Map to Territory) in the field of historical cartography for the study of environmental and landscape dynamics.

In terms of the Third Mission, the Libri di Storia - Incontri con gli autori (History Books - Meetings with Authors) series has long been dedicated to introducing the city not only to the research carried out within the university, but also to the most recent publications in the field of history, through direct discussions with the authors.
