Plesso di Viale San Michele - Cortile interno

The Modern Languages Unit consists of lecturers and researchers specialising in the study of foreign languages, literatures and cultures. Their work combines critical analysis of texts, authors, and movements with historical and sociological approaches to language and cultural study.

The Unit offers a broad selection of undergraduate and master's degree programmes aimed at providing interdisciplinary training. Students develop advanced proficiency in various foreign languages (Chinese, French, English, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and German), while strengthening intercultural and communication skills essential in today’s global and sustainable context. Many courses are taught in English and combine theory and practice through workshops, translation, linguistic mediation, cultural planning and international cooperation. Thanks to participation in the Edunext network, the range of blended-learning opportunities is gradually expanding.

Individual research within the Unit is coordinated and enhanced through joint initiatives, including the Unit's academic journal, La Torre di Babele (The Tower of Babel) and the biennial conference, Il traduttore visibile (The Visible Translator).

The Unit’s lecturers and researchers are also actively involved in intensive third-mission projects,  offering public-engagement activities for citizens and orientation events for secondary-school students.
